FC Utrecht ended the final match of the season with a 3-1 victory away against Roda JC. After 34 matches, Utrecht finished in 11th place.
Jan Wouters began the match in the knowledge that his team could at best rise one position in the Eredivisie. Injuries meant Mike van der Hoorn, Michael Zullo and Alexander Gerndt started the game. In the absence of Alje Schut and Nana Asare, Frank Demouge wore the captain's armband. In goal, Rob van Dijk closed his career in the Eredivisie at the age of 43 years and 112 days. Only keepers Jan Jongbloed and Pim Doesburg were older when they played in goal at the highest level.
The home team began brightly. Roda could qualify for the European play-offs if they won and results at RKC Waalwijk and N.E.C. went their way. The best chances in the first five minutes fell to Roda, but none of the Roda strikers were dangerous enough to score. Cedric van der Gun had to go off after ten minutes. A clash of heads with Rob Wielaert led to the injured striker being replaced with Anouar Kali.
Fists
Alexander Gerndt fired the ball into Roda's penalty area after 20 minutes. Substitute Kali knocked it on for Edouard Duplan to let loose, but he only succeeded in hitting the goalkeeper. Less than a minute later, Gerndt himself received the ball on the left but his fierce shot struck the goalkeeper's fists. Laurant Delorge had a good chance for Roda with just under 30 minutes on the clock but his shot was turned by Van Dijk's hand. After 34 minutes, Adil Ramzi had the 1-0 at his feet thanks to a pass from Ruud Vormer, but shot wide of goal. Mads Junker slid in but failed to get his foot to the ball. Less than a minute later Mike Van der Hoorn and Van Dijk responded well to a dangerous move when Sanharib Malki ran on to a through ball but got stuck in the Utrecht defence.
1-0
A minute before half-time, the Roda goalkeeper had to dive full-length to block a shot by Kali. A few moments later, Gerndt received the ball on the right, ran into the penalty area and struck hard. Mateusz Prus took the sting out of the ball but it slipped under his body and across the line. FC Utrecht went in at half time 1-0 up.
Second half
The second half began well for Utrecht. Michael Zullo brought Yoshiaki Takagi into play. Sjakie took the ball 30 metres and shot into the far corner out of Prus's reach. He was the 17th Utrecht player to score this season, a new club record. On the hour, Edouard Duplan had a chance to put Utrecht 3-0 ahead but his shot went over. In the counterattack that followed, Malki pulled a goal back for Roda. The Syrian received the ball near the penalty spot and shot it behind Van Dijk. Roda began to believe in their chances. With the crowd behind him, Malki had two good efforts denied by Van Dijk.
Fifteen minutes before time, FC Utrecht had several good chances. A header by Edouard Duplan went over, Kali shot across the face of goal and Demouge shot hard but high. Roda JC pressed hard but the final goal fell at the other end. Demouge received the ball on the right from Duplan. A measured shot chipped it over Roda goalie Prus. Roda's chances for a play-off place were definitely lost.
The win against Roda JC was the first victory in Kerkrade in 19 years. FC Utrecht ended the season in 11th place.
