FC Utrecht - ADO Den Haag: 1-1

2012-02-13 15:29:43

FC Utrecht started in the 4-4-2 line-up which had been successful against Ajax. Only in midfield were there some changes because Asare was injured. Instead of Asare this week Kali and Takagi played in midfield.

Immediately after the kick off it was FC Utrecht who set the tone. With a lot of pressure on ADO's half, Jan Wouters’ team was the leading party and the first chance came in the sixth minute. Alexander Gerndt crossed from the left side to Frank Demouge who came in front of Christian Kum. Demouge headed in but goalie Coutinho was able to push the ball over the goal miraculously.

Reward
After fifteen minutes ADO did something in return via Jens Toornstra. His effort struck Junior Fernández's feet. Anouar Kali cleared the ball just before the goal line. After half an hour FC Utrecht were rewarded. Mark van der Maarel gave a long cross which was headed through by Gerndt. Demouge had the ball on his foot and, like a striker is supposed to do, scored: 1-0.

Just before half time it went wrong. Mark van der Maarel headed an ADO cross from the right up into the air like a rocket. Lex Immers got the ball on his foot after FC Utrecht’s defence failed to decide what to do. Immers shot the ball rock hard in the goal, so half-time started with a draw.

Second half

After half-time ADO started more eagerly. Chery shot the ball just three feetwide of the goal just after half-time. After an hour Gerndt  ran into goalkeeper Coutinho.  What seemed to be an innocent clash ended in the goalkeeper being substituted by Robert Zwinkels.

In the 67th minute there was a good opportunity to make the 2-1. Sneijder's corner went beyond everyone. At the  far post Jan Wuytens was not able to put his toe against the ball. In the 73rd minute Galgenwaard stood up  because Cedric van der Gun made his comeback. Five minutes later the stadium held its breath because of a collision between Schut and Vicento. Both players lay injured on the ground. Schut was able to play,  but the ADO striker went  off the field on a stretcher.

Van der Maarel and Sneijder both received their fifth yellow card. This means that they are suspended for the match against AZ next week.

Gave nothing away
Coach Jan Wouters was not satisfied with a draw. “Normally, we have to win the home match against ADO. We did not give anything away, but we forgot to play football and lost ourselves in long balls. We deserved the victory. The boys gave everything they had, we have given everything”, the coach said afterwards.
