FC Utrecht and Lucean Sanmartean have decided to end their cooperation starting immediately. The 28 year old Romanian has handed back his contract because he could not succeed in getting fit for one hundred percent and being of a continuous importance for the team.
“In my opinion it is especially for Lucian himself very annoying that every time again he is faced with injuries” president Jan Willem van Dop says. “From the moment he started in Utrecht he and the medical staff have done everything they could to get him fit to play for a longer time. Several times we agreed a date, on which there should be a reasonable prospect of a durable recovery. And a number of times it seemed to work out. But unfortunately this did not come true.
The president has a lot of appreciation for the way Sanmartean has tried to get fit. “It is a tragedy for the guy”, Van Dop says. He has worked hard, even during the holidays, but every time again it went wrong. Then there comes a moment when you have to accept the hard reality. That moment has come now after his new drop out against PSV”.
Coach Willem van Hanegem, too, regrets very much that it did not work with Sanmartean finally. “In fact he is one of the best players in the Dutch premier league. A fit Sanmartean is absolutely of importance to the team. But if a player is injured every time again, one must make a decision. That’s in the team´s interest too´, Van Hanegem says. The contract with Sanmartean would expire at the end of this competition.
